Overview

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) from Allergan (an AbbVie company) is the original and most extensively studied botulinum toxin type A. It is a 900 kDa neurotoxin complex used across a wide range of aesthetic and therapeutic indications, and serves as the reference brand for the category. Its dosing units ('Allergan Units') are specific to the product.

How it works

OnabotulinumtoxinA blocks acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction by cleaving SNAP-25, temporarily relaxing the injected muscle. The effect is localised, dose-dependent and reversible over time.

Indications

  • Glabellar (frown) lines
  • Crow's feet (lateral canthal lines)
  • Forehead lines
  • Platysma bands / masseter (jaw) treatment
  • Hyperhidrosis, chronic migraine and other therapeutic uses

Key features

  • Original 900 kDa onabotulinumtoxinA complex
  • Vacuum-dried powder for reconstitution
  • 50/100/200 U vial strengths
  • Albumin-stabilised formulation
  • Product-specific 'Allergan Unit' dosing

Benefits

  • Category reference brand with the largest clinical evidence base
  • Broad range of approved aesthetic and therapeutic indications
  • Highly predictable, well-documented performance
  • Strong brand recognition and patient trust

Composition

Active ingredient is onabotulinumtoxinA, a Clostridium botulinum toxin type A neurotoxin complex (approximately 900 kDa), formulated with human serum albumin and sodium chloride. Supplied as a vacuum-dried powder in 50 U, 100 U and 200 U vials.

Usage & handling

Reconstitute with preservative-free 0.9% saline before injection. Store refrigerated at 2-8C (vials may also be stored frozen per labelling) and use the reconstituted solution within the recommended window. Allergan Units are unique to Botox and not convertible to any other toxin.
