Overview

Zinc-S is an injectable zinc preparation formulated as a trace-element supplement for parenteral nutrition. It supplies zinc, an essential cofactor for numerous enzymes and immune and skin functions, for patients in whom oral or enteral intake is inadequate or not advised. It is intended as a component of clinician-supervised nutritional admixtures rather than as a stand-alone bolus injection.

How it works

Zinc is an essential trace element and cofactor for over 300 enzymes involved in protein synthesis, cell division, wound healing, immune function and antioxidant defence (as a structural component of superoxide dismutase). Repletion supports normal enzymatic and immune activity where dietary intake is insufficient. Parenteral supplementation ensures availability during total parenteral nutrition.

Usage & handling

Intended to be added to parenteral nutrition admixtures rather than given as a direct undiluted IV push; a commonly cited TPN maintenance range is approximately 2.5-4 mg elemental zinc per day, adjusted for clinical status. Prepared and administered under medical/pharmacy supervision as part of a compounded nutritional solution. Verify local regulatory registration and compounding practice before use.
